I maintain, this is the best thing in the creation of all the world. After a busy week, maybe you forgot to turn off your alarm so it mistakenly goes off at 7:00 am. You awaken, fumble with the alarm app, trying to remember what day it is. And then you remember; Saturday – what bliss. Nowhere to be but here, in this bed.
Curling deeper into a sea of blankets and pillows. You let it engulf you completely, dozing off once again.
A few hours later your body wakes up naturally. Groggily, you rub your eyes and marvel at the time; 10:00 am? 10:30 am? When was the last time that happened!? Wow. You must have really needed it!
Rolling languidly out of bed, feet touching the cool floor, you trundle into the kitchen to make the elixir of the gods; Coffee. The smell of this magic brew fills your home. Settling onto the couch or slipping back into bed, you snuggle into the cushions and slowly sip your beverage of choice, feeling it gradually warm both body and soul. It wakes you cognitively. The slow whir, click and buzz of a well rested brain laced with the best legal drug there is begins to take place.
For me, about 15 minutes into my first coffee I’m overcome with a warm, caffeinated wave of love. This is usually when I text family members and friends with many sappy emojis, informing them how much I love and miss them. It’s the opposite of drunk texting. I call it “espresso your love” texting.
Feel like doing yoga? Maybe a little meditation? No need to get on the mat. There’s something so luxurious about doing twists and side bends in bed. You’re held a bit more softly by a fluffy mattress. Maybe you’ll even use a pillow like a bolster. Look at that! You just saved about $25 on a yoga class, and didn’t have to deal with any other weird smelling humans in your personal space! (Click HERE to read a whole article about the art of accessible yoga)
Next on the agenda? Absolutely nothing. You can just watch the day unfurl. Simply see what it offers you. And what’s even better? You hold the power to accept or reject these offers. One of the most satisfying things is sitting inside, journaling, reading, watching TV, napping on a day filled with sunshine and people milling about in the streets, and choosing the option NOT to participate. Instead, you refuel by resting in solitary heaven.
“But it’s a beautiful day!” You hear some faraway voice, laden with obligation and guilt. Not today, voice! Go bug a Catholic. This yogi has resting to do.
Please know these mornings or days are not going to waste. The energy you save and create during these precious times are like high octane fuel for the busy days. Restoration is not stagnation. It is the act of letting go of tension and filling up with peace.
Lazy mornings are acts of wise restoration.
So hit snooze. Sleep in. Tell the world it can wait. You have some grade “A” laziness to accomplish.
After all, doing nothing is no small feat. It is an act of big, lazy love.
